The Latest Phillies Injury Updates

  • Matt Strahm (left shoulder impingement)
  • Status: On track for Opening Day
  • Strahm will pitch in the Grapefruit League finale against the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday, March 24. If all goes well, he will be on the Opening Day roster.
  • Strahm was slowed down by a left shoulder injury this spring. He pitched in a minor league game on the backfields of the Carpenter Complex on Saturday, March 22 and felt good afterwards. As Lochlahn March of the Philadelphia Inquirer reported, Strahm also tested out a new pitch: a kick changeup. Strahm’s fastball velocity reportedly sat at 90-92 mph during the minor league game. — Last Updated March 23 by Destiny Lugardo

  • Ranger Suárez (back stiffness)
  • Status: Will begin regular season on 15-day injured list
  • Ranger Suárez will open the season on the injured list. He could miss two to three starts, Rob Thomson said during an in-game interview in the Phillies’ 4-2 win over the Detroit Tigers on Sunday, March 23. Taijuan Walker will take his spot in the rotation. This is the second time in three years that Suárez will begin the season on the IL. He missed a month last summer due to lower back soreness.
  • “We just want to make sure this thing is right,” Thomson said. “He’s played catch the last couple of days. In the next couple of days, he’ll have a bullpen [session]. Probably a couple bullpens, see some hitters and then start building him back up.” — Last Updated March 23 by Destiny Lugardo

  • Weston Wilson (left oblique strain)
  • Status: Will begin season on 10-day injured list, could be back late April or early May
  • Weston Wilson was one of the front runners to win the last bench spot as a fourth or fifth right-handed hitting infield/outfield option. He’ll have to wait a little longer to make an impact with the big league club. The 30-year-old will open the season on the injured list with an oblique strain. Wilson felt something while hitting in the batting cages on February 21.
  • Wilson will stay in Florida and is expected to begin a minor-league rehab assignment in early April, according to The Athletic’s Matt Gelb. He has progressed to “running, doing defensive drills and taking some light swings.” — Last Updated March 23 by Destiny Lugardo
