According to the Phillies, Bobby Abreu did not make the Phillies opening day roster. Abreu, who signed a minor league deal with an invite to spring training back in January, was attempting a comeback after spending a year out of baseball.
Abreu originally had an opt out date of today, but agreed Tuesday to push the date back to this Sunday. At 40 years old, the former Gold Glove outfielders’ range has diminished considerably. At this point in his career he would be nothing more than a lefty bat off the bench.
In 17 games this spring (41 AB) Abreu hit .244 with an OBP of .404. It is unknown at this time whether or not Abreu would be willing to report to the minors. Final rosters have to be in by 3 PM EST on Sunday.
Many fans were outraged when Amaro signed Abreu back in January, as it made an old team even older, but this was a move to see what the former All Star had left in the tank. Abreu had a rough day in RF today, making the decision to let him go easier. I think the Abreu signing ended as expected. At this point in his career Abreu is a defensive liability and best suited for a bench spot on an AL team.
