The Phillies announced Friday that they have extended manager Pete Mackanin’s contract through 2017, adding a 2018 option.

The contract replaces the previous deal signed in September, which guaranteed 2016 and added a 2017 option.
In short, the Phillies like Mackanin enough to give him two guaranteed years and a possible third. And the only real sample they have between the original contract and this extension is a month of spring training, one in which the Phils have played very well, showing plenty of optimism at the end of a rebuilding phase.
Mackanin, as has been reported, is well liked among players. The 64-year-old took over managerial duties after Ryne Sandberg quit during the 2015 season.
