Phillies Minor League Report: Lakewood pitches a great week

Let’s run through the minor leagues and check in on the Phils’ top prospects.

LEHIGH VALLEY: For the first time in a while, the Pigs had a losing week, going 2-3, and losing a series to Buffalo.

The hitters:

  • Jorge Alfaro: .267/.300/.403, 16 XBH, 66 K, 5 BB, 206 AB
  • Jesmuel Valentin: .229/.282/.292, 4 XBH, 16 K, 6 BB, 96 AB (out for season)
  • Rhys Hoskins: .294/.387/.589, 35 XBH, 41 K, 35 BB, 231 AB
  • Roman Quinn: .274/.344/.389, 13 XBH, 49 K, 18 BB, 175 AB (7-day disabled list)
  • Cameron Perkins: .295/.390/.460, 22 XBH, 35 K, 27 BB, 200 AB
  • Nick Williams: .272/.305/.502, 26 XBH, 77 K, 8 BB, 235 AB
  • Dylan Cozens: .248/.310/.496, 25 XBH, 80 K, 21 BB, 234 AB
  • J.P. Crawford: .194/.313/.252, 7 XBH, 42 K, 36 BB, 206 AB
  • Brock Stassi: .333/.379/.444, 1 XBH, 3 K, 2 BB, 27 AB (.333/.429/.333, 0 XBH, 0 K, 1 BB, 6 AB in Reading)

Crawford tweaked his groin last Saturday but should be back Monday and avoid any trips to the DL. Meanwhile, Quinn is already in rehab in Florida, a great sign for the oft-injured outfielder. Alfaro had a big week, of course.

The pitchers:

  • Jake Thompson: 55.2 IP, 6.79 ERA, 48 K, 24 BB
  • Ricardo Pinto: 50.1 IP, 4.65 ERA, 32 K, 17 BB
  • Mark Appel: 63 IP, 5.71 ERA, 41 K, 38 BB
  • Tom Eshelman: 52 IP, 1.56 ERA, 37 K, 5 BB (29 IP, 3.10 ERA, 22 K, 5 BB in Reading)
  • Jesen Therrien: 9.1 IP, 3.86 ERA, 8 K, 2 BB (26.2 IP, 1.35 ERA, 35 K, 3 BB in Reading)

Nothing too fun happening on the mound.

READING: The Fightin’ Phils ripped off eight-straight wins before dropping a tough one late on Friday against Binghamton. At 37-26, Reading still is five back of Trenton.

The hitters:

  • Andrew Pullin: .316/.378/.564, 35 XBH, 41 K, 22 BB, 250 AB
  • Malquin Canelo: .237/.325/.343, 13 XBH, 52 K, 23 BB, 169 AB
  • Scott Kingery: .302/.376/.609, 36 XBH, 45 K, 26 BB, 248 AB
  • Carlos Tocci: .286/.355/.359, 12 XBH, 37 K, 17 BB, 220 AB
  • Zachary Coppola: .194/.341/.194, 0 XBH, 4 K, 8 BB, 36 AB (.350/.413/.413, 7 XBH, 26 K, 17 BB in Clearwater)

Pullin continues to hit. Everyone else … as is.

  • Drew Anderson: 67.1 IP, 3.48 ERA, 58 K, 19 BB
  • Brandon Leibrandt: 66.2 IP, 3.65 ERA, 48 K, 21 BB
  • Yacksel Rios: 33 IP, 2.18 ERA, 40 K, 7 BB (assigned to Williamsport)

Rios was sent to Williamsport, but it’s likely a paper move (part of roster shuffling) because Ranfi Casimiro is coming up from Clearwater. Watch for Rios to either be back in Reading or move to Lehigh Valley (or Philadelphia, after a 40-man roster placement).

CLEARWATER: A 3-3 week for the Treshers, mostly against Lakeland.

Hitters:

Pujols hit his third home run of the season this week. So there’s that.

Pitchers:

Taveras may be in line for the mid-season promotion.

LAKEWOOD: A great week for Lakewood! They go 5-1 with wins against Delmarva, Hagerstown and current opponent Hickory. In the wins, they outscored their opponents 38-5. Good stuff.

Hitters:

  • Daniel Brito: .235/.298/.321, 12 XBH, 55 K, 18 BB, 234 AB
  • Mickey Moniak: .277/.333/.403, 21 XBH, 52 K, 18 BB, 231 AB
  • Arquimedes Gamboa: .230/.320/.310, 5 XBH, 17 K, 12 BB, 87 AB

Moniak rebounded a little this week.

Pitchers:

Talk about a week. Ten strikeouts for Romero. Twelve for Medina. And Sanchez returned and was his regular self. Great pitching all around for the Claws.
