Very late Thursday night, the Phillies removed outfielder Cameron Perkins and infielder Engelb Vielma from the 40-man roster, placing them on outright waivers.
A player on outright waivers can be claimed by another team, who will then have to place the player on its 40-man roster. If no team claims the player, he could then be placed back in the Phils farm system.
These moves mean the 40-man roster is now at 38 players heading toward the Winter Meetings, which begin Sunday. It raises the possibility that the Phils will be busy during the meetings, whether making a trade, signing a free agent or two, or making a Rule 5 Draft pick.
Perkins, 27, hit .182/.237/.273 in 97 plate appearances last year for the Phillies. He projects as a backup outfielder who can play all three positions. The Phillies claimed Vielma, 23, a utility infielder from the Minnesota system, off waivers just last month. He hit .229/.273/.280 across double- and triple-A last year.
