There’s less than 24 hours until the non-waiver trade deadline, but it’s evident that the Philadelphia Phillies want to make an outfield addition.
According to Jon Morosi of MLB.com, the Phillies continue to show interest in Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Curtis Granderson. SNY‘s Andy Martino echoed those same sentiments. Both also noted that the Yankees, who employed Granderson from 2010-2014, are also interested with Aaron Judge now on the disabled list with a chip fracture in his right wrist.
This isn’t the first time that the Phillies have been connected to the three-time All-Star. After I suggested earlier this month that the 37-year-old could be a good fit for the Phillies, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reported that the Phillies were “talking to the Blue Jays” regarding Granderson last Monday.
Granderson is currently slashing .233/.334/.419 with 10 home runs and 31 RBIs. He wouldn’t push Nick Williams altogether out of starting in right field, but likely would get some starts at the position while upgrading the Phillies bench on days he didn’t start. The only thing that makes him an awkward fit is that he, like Williams, bats left-handed. But his wealth of postseason experience would certainly be valuable on a young Phillies team that’s hoping to make the playoffs for the first time since 2011.
“The Grandy man” is just one of a few outfield options that the Phillies appear to be considering. While it appears that Adam Jones wasn’t interested in waiving his no-trade clause to leave Baltimore, Morosi reported Monday that the Phillies have interest in San Francisco Giants right fielder Andrew McCutchen. Jon Heyman of Fancred Sports added (and Martino confirmed), that the Phillies have interest in Jose Bautista of the New York Mets.
