Phillies turn to Arrieta in matinee rubber-match against Padres

Sometimes, salvaging a road trip is the best you can hope for. It’s sometimes for the Philadelphia Phillies.

After dropping the first four games of a West Coast road trip (and five overall), the Phillies got back into the win column Tuesday evening thanks to a six-RBI performance from Jay Bruce. As the Phillies wrap up their six-game West Coast trip Wednesday afternoon, they’re guaranteed to finish the trip with a losing record. But 2-4 with a series victory would look a lot better than 1-5 with two series losses would.

Jake Arrieta will get the ball for the Phillies Wednesday afternoon at Petco Park, and it would probably be a fair assessment to say that the 33-year-old has been a mixed bag in 2019. Two starts ago, Arrieta went eight innings against a loaded Milwaukee Brewers lineup, allowing just five hits and two runs in a win at Miller Park. He wasn’t able to replicate that success last Friday at Chavez Ravine, as he allowed 10 hits and five earned runs in five innings in a loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Gabe Kapler’s squad will look for a bounce-back performance from Arrieta, the 2015 National League Cy Young Award winner, Wednesday.
