Tom Eshelman posted a 2.77 ERA in his last four starts at Triple-A Lehigh Valley
The Philadelphia Phillies acquired some international slot money by trading pitching prospect Tom Eshelman to the Baltimore Orioles. Eshelman, 24, had been pitching for Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
It looked like Eshelman was inching close to the big leagues after a 2017 season that saw him go 10-3 with a 2.23 ERA in 18 starts in Triple-A. He walked just 13 batters in 121 innings of work and was named one of the Phillies’ Paul Owens recipients alongside Scott Kingery.
2018 did not produce similar results. In 27 games (26 starts), Eshelman lost 13 of his 15 decisions to the tune of a 5.84 ERA. He had a rough start to 2019, going 0-3 with a 6.28 ERA for Double-A Reading in six starts, but had turned things around recently in Lehigh Valley with a 2.77 ERA in four starts.
Eshelman was acquired by the Phillies from the Astros on December 12, 2015, in addition to Brett Oberholtzer, Harold Arauz, Mark Appel and Vince Velasquez. Philadelphia sent Ken Giles and Jonathan Arauz to Houston in the deal. Velasquez remains the only player from the deal in the Phillies organization. Arauz is in the Cardinals organization at the Triple-A level while Oberholtzer and Appel are no longer in baseball.
Eshelman is 25-28 with with a 4.18 ERA in 88 minor league games. He was selected in the second round of the 2015 Major League Baseball Draft by the Astros.
