The Philadelphia Phillies haven’t been able to put together any sort of consistency on offense. The heart of the order hasn’t produced nearly as much as they’ve needed to and the team is 18th in Major League Baseball in runs scored.
Despite the up-and-down trend of this Phillies team, rookie outfielder Adam Haseley has been one of the lone bright spots. The 23-year-old was summoned from Triple-A following injuries at the big league level and made his debut on June 4.
In 24 games, the former Virginia product is slashing .274/.315/.452 with six doubles, three home runs and 12 RBIs. In addition to his solid hitting, Haseley plays a really good center field defensively.
With all that said, it was a bit surprising to see Haseley get sent to Triple-A as Jay Bruce returns.
The #Phillies have reinstated OF Jay Bruce from 10-day IL and optioned OF Adam Haseley to Triple-A.

Philadelphia’s acquisition of Corey Dickerson and Jay Bruce’s return combined with the increased playing time of Roman Quinn made Haseley the odd man out for now. He wasn’t the only one sent down lately due to the team’s number of outfielder. The Phillies sent Maikel Franco to Triple-A because of his lack of positional versatility, but also due to the team’s outfield surplus. The Franco move shifted Scott Kingery from the outfield to third base.
Meanwhile, Jay Bruce is back in the Phillies lineup as they begin their series in San Francisco on Thursday night. In 33 games since joining the Phillies, Bruce is hitting .256 with 10 home runs and 29 RBIs. He’s got an on-base percentage of .273, but his ability to hit the home run makes him an obvious re-addition to the lineup.
There were definitely other options when it came to sending guys to the minors, but the Phillies value the defensive versatility of guys like Sean Rodriguez and Brad Miller at this point in time.
