Harper was chosen as the Phillies representative in the voting for the award. According to Major League Baseball, the Hank Aaron Award is “awarded annually to the best overall offensive performer in each league.”
The star right fielder was the Phillies most reliable hitter in 2019. His 35 home runs, 114 runs batted in, 98 runs scored, 15 stolen bases and .882 OPS all led the team this past season. Harper was also second on the team in walks and doubles.
Harper was one of the the better hitters in the National League in 2019 as well. Harper was top-20 in the National League in on-base percentage, OPS, home runs, doubles and RBIs. The 99 walks that he drew ranked fifth in the National League and eighth in all of baseball.
This past season was Harper’s first in a Phillies uniform. The 26-year-old signed a then-record-setting 13-year, $330 million contract in February. He was able to overcome some early struggles to put together a very solid first year in red pinstripes.
Harper was previously selected as the winner of the National League Hank Aaron Award in 2015, when he posted a Major League-leading 1.109 OPS and 9.3 fWAR.
