Andrew McCutchen’s alter ego, Uncle Larry is back with another video as the suspension of the 2020 MLB season continues.
In his previous video, Uncle Larry sent a message to new Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady asking if he needed a workout partner:
In his latest video, Cutch challenged Uncle Larry to a home run derby that consisted of three swings each. Larry accepted the challenge and taught Cutch one thing or two about hitting home runs, including adding pop:
McCutchen’s first season with the Phillies had a promising start, but was cut short. The five-time All-Star was excellent for the Phillies in April and May, posting a .378 on-base percentage at the top of the order. Unfortunately, a non-contact injury during a rundown in early June ended his season, and the Phillies went just 49-54 after McCutchen tore his ACL.
If there is one good thing that comes out of this suspension for the Phillies, it is the gain of McCutchen back in the lineup. The time off has allowed the 33-year-old to continue getting healthier as he is one of the handful of players that remained near Clearwater working out at the Phillies Carpenter Complex.
The MLB Player’s Association currently is working through a proposal for the 2020 season that includes the DH becoming universal. Though the Phillies plan on using McCutchen as their everyday left fielder, being able to use him as an occasional DH could benefit both sides. It would allow McCutchen to get an off day from playing in the field in a season that will be a sprint, rather than a marathon. Having McCutchen’s bat consistently in the lineup for as many games as possible is something the Phillies are going to need this season if they want to contend for the postseason.
