May 27, 2017 – Phillies 4, Reds 3
After losing to the Cincinnati Reds the night before, the Phillies were looking to bounce back during the second game of the three-game series. Jerad Eickhoff started on the mound and got the Phillies in a bit of a hole in the first inning. After Reds center fielder Billy Hamilton reached first with a lead-off bunt, Eickhoff gave up a two-run home run.
When he hit the next batter – Joey Votto – with a pitch it was beginning to look like it would not be a good day for Eickhoff. However, after his stumbles in the first inning he settled in, allowed the Phillies to retake the lead, and prevented any other runs until the sixth inning.
The Phillies offense was facing off against Bronson Arroyo—the pitcher who had given up the most home runs in the National League at the time. Arroyo lived up to his reputation. When Cesar Hernandez stepped up to the plate, he hit a lead-off home run deep into right field. Then, to lead-off the second inning, Michael Saunders hit a solo home run that landed in the second deck of Citizens Bank Park and tied the game. The Phillies took the lead in the bottom of the fourth with yet another solo home run, this one hit by Tommy Joseph.
Heading into the bottom of the ninth, the Reds had tied the game and were trying to hold off the Phillies so they could win in extra innings. The first batter up was Aaron Altherr. Altherr had gone 0-3 up to that point, but he managed to get his first and only hit of the game when the Phillies needed him most. After reaching first, he stole second and put himself in scoring position. Joseph was at bat and nailed a line drive to center field. From there, it was a race between Altherr and the throw home; a race Altherr won. The Phillies walked off with a 4-3 win.
