June 15, 2011 – Phillies 5, Marlins 4 (10 innings)
On this day in 2011, the Phillies extended their lead in the NL East to five games following a ninth-inning rally and an extra-inning walk-off in Game 2 of a twin-bill.
In Game 1, Kyle Kendrick hurled seven innings of one-run ball and the Phils were looking to get a similar performance out of ace Roy Halladay in Game 2. Unfortunately, Doc was a little shaky against the Marlins and late-game heroics were needed to win this one.
Trailing by two heading into the ninth, Shane Victorino laced a two-run single to tie the game before Carlos Ruiz walked things off in the 10th with a run-scoring single just out of the reach of Hanley Ramirez.
The Marlins got the scoring going right off the bat in this one. Ramirez led-off with a double off of Halladay and he came around to score on a Logan Morrison grounder two hitters later. Gaby Sanchez followed with a home run to deep right-center field, giving Florida an early 2-0 advantage.
Philadelphia got one back in the bottom half. Marlins righty Anibal Sanchez issued a base on balls to Jimmy Rollins to start the inning. Two batters later, Chase Utley hit a double to left, plating Rollins to cut the Marlins lead in half.
Halladay looked to be settling down in the third, striking out two Marlins to end the inning, but Florida extended their lead in the fourth. Former Phillies pinch-hit star Greg Dobbs reached on a ground-rule double and advanced to third on a Jose Lopez double. John Buck slapped a single to center, scoring both Dobbs and Lopez to make it a 4-2 Marlins lead.
In the bottom of the fifth, Shane Victorino hit a one-out single and scored on a triple off the bat of Chase Utley to bring them to within two.
Roy Halladay was able to avoid any more damage, striking out the side in the seventh to end his day.
Still, the Marlins led 4-2 going into the bottom of the ninth after Mike Stutes stranded two runners in the top half. Carlos Ruiz and Ross Gload both hit one-out singles to start the threat against Juan Carlos Oviedo. Jimmy Rollins lined out for the second out, but Shane Victorino came through with a two-run single to knot things up at four a piece.
Victorino stole second and advanced to third on John Buck’s throwing error, but Chase Utley flied out to left to send the game to extras.
Ryan Madson was able to work through Florida’s toughest hitters in the top of the 10th, allowing two runners to reach before striking out Giancarlo Stanton. Mike Dunn took over for the Marlins in the bottom of the 10th and hit Ryan Howard to begin the inning. Placido Polanco flew out and Raul Ibanez struck out before Mike Dunn walked Domonic Brown. Ruiz followed with a single to center, just under Hanley Ramirez’s glove, plating Howard to win the game.
