Bryson Stott is one of the Phillies' top prospects. (Cheryl Pursell) Infielder Bryson Stott and right-handed pitcher Jean Cabrera have made the most of the return of the minor leagues in 2021, and their performances in the Philadelphia Phillies system this season have now been formally recognized. Stott and Cabrera have been selected as the 2021 Paul Owens Award winners, the team announced Friday. The award is given out each year to the Phillies' top minor-league position player and pitcher. Stott, a 2019 first-round pick, began the season at High-A Jersey Shore and played his way to Double-A Reading by the start of June. In 100 minor-league games, the 23-year-old is batting .294/.381/.493 with 15 home runs, 46 RBIs and 111 hits. Stott represented the Phillies at this summer's All-Star Futures Game and was previously announced as the 2021 Reading Fightin Phils MVP. "Bryson is a true baseball player, which is the ultimate compliment," Reading manager Shawn Williams said in a statement. "He does everything to help the team win. Bryson is great teammate, plays the game right way, and is great player in all areas." Cabrera earned the award in only his first season of minor-league play. After signing with the Phillies as an international free agent out of Venezuela in July 2019, the 19-year-old made his professional debut this July in the Dominican Summer League. Cabrera has excelled so far in his short career, recording a 1.37 ERA in 46 innings over 11 starts with a 0.85 WHIP and 11.15 strikeouts per nine. “Jean has dominated hitters this season and put himself on the radar within the organization," Phillies general manager Sam Fuld said in a statement. "He fills up the strike zone with his fastball, slider and changeup, and has flashed some exciting stuff for a 19-year-old. Jean possesses meaningful upside with his combination of stuff, command and competitiveness. He is very well-deserving of this award.” The two prospects will receive the Paul Owens Award -- named for the late scout, manager and executive who worked for the Phillies for 48 years -- on the field at Citizens Bank Park on Monday, Sept. 20, ahead of the matchup between the Phillies and the Baltimore Orioles.
